SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability
Rating: Low to Moderate
- Alcohol: Ethanol is a common form of alcohol used in cosmetics. It is typically derived from renewable sources like corn or sugarcane. While production can be energy-intensive, ethanol made from sustainably grown crops can be considered eco-friendly.
- Aqua (Water): Water itself is a renewable resource, but water usage in cosmetics can contribute to environmental stress, especially in areas facing water scarcity. The sustainability of water as an ingredient depends on responsible sourcing and efforts to reduce water usage in production.
- Glycerin: Glycerin is often derived from plant oils such as soy or palm. Plant-based glycerin can be sustainable if it’s sourced from renewable and responsibly managed crops. However, glycerin from palm oil can contribute to deforestation if not sourced from certified sustainable sources (like RSPO-certified palm oil).
- Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): Panthenol is a synthetic compound, but it can be derived from renewable resources. The environmental impact is relatively low compared to other synthetic ingredients, but sustainability depends on the production process.
- Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer: This is a synthetic polymer used as a thickening agent. It is not biodegradable and may accumulate in the environment, contributing to microplastic pollution. Its sustainability is a concern because it is petroleum-based and not easily broken down.
- Aminomethyl Propanol: This is a synthetic pH adjuster. It is not considered biodegradable, but its environmental impact is generally low in small amounts as used in cosmetics. However, its production involves petrochemical processes, which are not sustainable.
- Parfum (Fragrance): Fragrance ingredients are often synthetic and may contain non-renewable petrochemicals. The sustainability of "parfum" varies depending on its composition. Synthetic fragrances tend to have a higher environmental impact due to their potential toxicity to aquatic life and non-biodegradability.\
- Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice: Aloe is a renewable resource and can be sustainably farmed. Aloe production is often environmentally friendly, especially when organic farming practices are used, as the plant requires minimal water and pesticides.
