SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability
Rating: Moderate
- Water: Water is a natural resource, but excessive use in production can be problematic, especially in water-scarce regions. Sustainable practices in water usage are essential.
- Butylene Glycol: This ingredient is derived from petroleum, making it less sustainable compared to plant-derived alternatives. It is biodegradable but its production has environmental implications.
- Phenoxyethanol:
A synthetic preservative that is effective in small concentrations. While it
has low bioaccumulation potential, it is not readily biodegradable, raising
concerns about environmental impact.
- PPG-1-PEG-9
Lauryl Glycol Ether: A synthetic surfactant that is
generally considered low in toxicity but can have environmental concerns due to
its non-biodegradable nature.
- PEG-7
Glyceryl Cocoate: This is a plant-derived
emulsifier that is biodegradable, making it a more sustainable option. Its
sourcing depends on responsible agricultural practices for coconuts.
- Polysorbate
80: Typically derived from sorbitol and oleic acid,
it is a synthetic emulsifier. While it is effective and widely used, its
sustainability depends on the sourcing of its components.
- Glycereth-7:
A derivative of glycerin, which can be plant-based or synthetic. If
plant-derived, it is renewable and biodegradable; otherwise, sustainability may
be lower.
- Decyl
Glucoside: A biodegradable surfactant made from natural
sources like corn and coconuts, making it eco-friendly and sustainable.
- Potassium
Dimethicone PEG-7 Phosphate: A silicone-based compound that
provides conditioning effects but is generally not biodegradable and may
persist in the environment.
- Fragrance:
The sustainability of fragrances can vary widely based on whether they are
synthetic or derived from natural sources. Synthetic fragrances can have a
higher environmental impact.
- Propylparaben
& Methylparaben: These are synthetic
preservatives. They are effective but have raised concerns regarding their
environmental persistence and potential impact on aquatic life.
- Sodium
PCA: A naturally occurring component in human skin, it
is derived from plant sources and is biodegradable, contributing positively to
sustainability.
- Aloe
Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract: Aloe Vera is a sustainable
ingredient when sourced from responsibly managed farms, as it is biodegradable
and has low environmental impact.
- Vanilla
Planifolia Fruit Extract: Derived from vanilla beans,
sustainability depends on farming practices. Sustainable sourcing is essential,
as vanilla farming can have significant ecological impacts.
- Musa
Sapientum (Banana) Leaf Extract: This is a renewable ingredient
when sourced from sustainably managed banana plantations, as banana plants can
be harvested without killing the plant.
- Benzyl Benzoate: Used as a fragrance component and preservative, it can be derived from natural sources or synthesized. Its sustainability varies based on the sourcing method.
