1. Sodium Benzoate (Na benzoate)
Sodium benzoate is a preservative commonly used in food and personal care products to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast, and molds. It is the sodium salt of benzoic acid.
a. Sourcing and Production:
- Sodium benzoate is synthetically produced from benzoic acid, which is derived from toluene, a petrochemical. However, benzoic acid can also be naturally occurring in some fruits and plants (e.g., cranberries, cinnamon, and clove). The commercial process, however, typically uses petrochemical feedstocks.
- Petrochemical dependence: The use of toluene as a starting material for synthetic benzoic acid means that sodium benzoate is associated with fossil fuel extraction, and the production process generates greenhouse gases and other pollutants unless cleaner methods are employed.
b. Environmental Impact:
- Biodegradability: Sodium benzoate is biodegradable, meaning that it will break down in the environment over time. This characteristic is favorable from a sustainability standpoint because it reduces long-term environmental persistence.
- Water pollution: While sodium benzoate is biodegradable, in large quantities, it may contribute to eutrophication in water bodies, leading to algal blooms and degraded water quality if improperly disposed of or released into wastewater systems in high concentrations.
- Human health concerns: When sodium benzoate is combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), it can form benzene, a carcinogen. This reaction is more likely to occur in conditions of high temperature and light exposure, particularly in food products and beverages.
c. Sustainability Issues:
- Non-renewable sourcing: While sodium benzoate can be derived from natural sources, the widespread use of synthetic petrochemical-based production limits its sustainability. The impact of fossil fuel use in its manufacturing process remains a concern for those advocating for renewable chemicals and green chemistry.
