Ingredients
Lactic Acid, Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulphonate, Dipropylene Glycol Butyl Ether, Alcohols, C10-12, Ethoxylated, Ethanol, Sodium Laureth Sulphate, Sodium Hydroxide
SUSTAINABILITY
Rating: Moderate to Low
- Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is a renewable and biodegradable ingredient, typically derived from fermented corn or beets, making it relatively sustainable. Its production can have a low environmental impact if derived from responsibly sourced, organic plant materials.
- Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulphonate (SDBS): This surfactant is commonly used in detergents and is effective in breaking down grease. However, SDBS is petroleum-based and not easily biodegradable, potentially accumulating in aquatic ecosystems and causing harm to marine life. Sustainable alternatives to SDBS exist, although they are less common.
- Dipropylene Glycol Butyl Ether: This solvent has moderate toxicity and is typically derived from petroleum. Its biodegradability is limited, and it may pose a hazard to aquatic environments. Sustainable sourcing of this chemical is challenging since it’s petroleum-based, but some manufacturers are working to improve its environmental impact.
- Alcohols, C10-12, Ethoxylated: These are ethoxylated alcohols used as surfactants or cleaning agents. They can be derived from both petroleum and plant sources. If derived from sustainable palm or coconut oils, the impact is lower, but if petroleum-based, they are less sustainable. They are generally biodegradable but can still cause harm in aquatic environments.
- Ethanol: Ethanol is often derived from fermenting renewable sources like corn or sugarcane, making it relatively sustainable. However, the sustainability depends on the source, as monoculture farming for ethanol production can lead to deforestation and soil depletion.
- Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES): SLES is a common surfactant often derived from palm or coconut oil, with ethylene oxide added. Its sustainability depends largely on whether the palm or coconut oil is responsibly sourced. Ethoxylation can create pollutants, but SLES is generally biodegradable.
- Sodium Hydroxide: Also known as lye or caustic soda, sodium hydroxide is widely used in cleaning products. Although it is not directly harmful to the environment, its production is energy-intensive, and it requires careful handling due to its caustic nature. However, it’s considered a low-impact ingredient when used responsibly.
