SUSTAINABILITY
Rating: Moderate
- Aqua (Water): Widely available, but excessive use in formulations can strain water resources.
- Petrolatum: Petroleum-based and non-renewable. While production is less toxic than other petroleum derivatives, it is not biodegradable.
- Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate: A mild surfactant derived from natural sources (e.g., coconut oil) or synthetic processes. Biodegradable and generally low environmental impact.
- Glycerin: Often plant-derived and biodegradable. Synthetic glycerin has a lower sustainability rating due to its petroleum base.
- Niacinamide: A synthetic vitamin B3 derivative. Production is resource-intensive but non-toxic.
- Lauryl Betaine: Biodegradable and typically derived from coconut or palm oil. Impact depends on sustainable sourcing practices.
- Lactic Acid: Biodegradable and often derived from natural fermentation. Environmentally friendly with minimal impact.
- Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate: A coconut oil-derived surfactant. Biodegradable and renewable with low toxicity, but its production can impact sustainability if coconut oil is not sustainably sourced.
- Sodium PCA: Biodegradable and derived from natural amino acids. Minimal environmental impact.
- Xanthan Gum: Biodegradable and derived from natural fermentation of sugars.
- 1,2-Hexanediol and Caprylyl Glycol: Synthetic humectants that are biodegradable and have low toxicity. Moderate environmental impact during production.
- Sodium Polyacrylate: Synthetic polymer, non-biodegradable, and a contributor to microplastic pollution.
- Ceramide NP, Ceramide EOP: Synthetic or plant derived. Production impacts vary, with synthetic versions having a higher environmental footprint.
- Cholesterol: Typically, animal- or synthetic-derived. Sustainability depends on sourcing practices.
- Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil: Plant-based, renewable, and biodegradable. Farming practices (e.g., water use and pesticides) affect sustainability.
